Adding to the electronic styles for this month, this one was inspired by the fast pace work environment I’ve  been experiencing lately.  I used my Alesis Q6.1 for all the sounds and mixed it down with the Fostex recorder.  This will be the first of many more mixes to come since recording is coming a little easier these days.  Enjoy.

Continuing our exploration of electronic music this week, check out 95to695. This is my musical equivalent to my often crazy drive home from work, including the junction from I-95 to I-695 during evening rush hour.

Matt Cain lent me a little midi controller device he has called a “Trigger Finger” the other day by M-Audio. Last week I was able to set up the device to work on my Macbook Pro through Garageband to trigger various sounds and effects, much like a percussive keyboard would and put together this song, Strip, with my first experiences with the device. Likely you’ll hear more from the Trigger Finger in the coming weeks as I play around with the device more and learn more about how to do things with it.

Several weeks ago, my friend asked if we could work on a song for an ad campaign he was working on. The campaign was for the rebranding of a special education school and they were looking for a catchy children’s song for the campaign. We were provided with the lyrics and an example of what they came up with already for the campaign so we went to work the following weekend putting together the song in our own way.
My New Story is the result of the weekend.

Neil came up with the bass line to start us off and we did a series of layers to record the piece in a similar manner to studio style recording. Amber Scott did some guest vocals with us on the song as well.

Here’s one I did a while back, probably in ’06 or ’07 with my Alesis and the new expansion back I bought for it. It was a hip-hop expansion pack that had some cool beats, plus I could play bass and the synth live, all at the same time.

The last couple of weeks, I’ve been playing around with my iPhone and with some of the applications available through the Apple store. There are quite a few music instrument applications available and, although most of them are quite terrible, some are actually pretty versatile so I wanted to put together some songs using them. Cattail Walk was initially composed using an iPhone app called Euphonics with layering provided by Jeremy using full sized keyboard synths and some effects provided through Garageband.

During our last patio session, Neil disappeared for a couple of minutes while Jeremy and I were playing around with some sounds. He returned with an assortment of various oddities from his nearby shed. He then set these items out in a drum kit-like pattern around him and proceeded to play the collection of flowerpots, lawn chairs and tables. I picked up a large plastic flowerpot and began to play it as I would with a Djembe, integrating snaps and claps throughout. Jeremy carried us through this random assortment of percussion with a melody from the keys.
In post-production, I decided we needed to do something a little different with this one. Rather than just have a relatively clean track, I decided to layer various effects on there to make it sound strangely organic. Jeremy’s keys sound a bit like a guitar with a wah pedal. The percussion mutates in crazy ways throughout the track. It’s really fun to listen to.

I’ve been playing this game lately with a lot of Trance and Drum-and-Bass influenced music, and it’s reignited my interest in electronic music in general. My tool selection these days for putting together this kind of music is limited these days but it’s still fun to utilize what I have sometimes to throw things together. I also like warping sounds and making them sound unusual and finding ways to inject them into the music in a way that perhaps hasn’t been heard before.
Additionally, in this song, I approached the vocal parts in a different way. I sang sections of lyrics through the song but didn’t concentrate on enunciation or even being able to understand the lyrics through the music. In this song, I just wanted to work the vocals in as other instruments so I sang the track and ran heavy effects of parts of my voice to give it other textures and sounds. It was definitely a fun experiment to play around with.

It’s always nice having our friend Beavis (Matthew Hundley) come up and jam with us. He adds a whole new element to the music with his slick guitar work. This one was recorded at my house with the Hammond organ, this also adds a different touch than our usual sound. Beav is also playing guitar on the entire Lonely Microphone Recordings album as well as these other songs.

The Photographer (from the Knick Knacks album) My personal favorite.
