Swimming with Sharks :: Live Music Video

The fourth and final video recording we have from the Greene Turtle set is a improvisational performance of Swimming with Sharks. I’d written the words to this about a week before the show, reflecting on a very difficult work project I’d recently completed over the winter. During our set, Jeremy switched into jamming on this chord progression and I immediately thought the words might work with the progression so I just started singing along to it.

Here’s the third video installment of our set at the Green Turtle. It’s a cover of Hurt, by Nine Inch Nails. Unfortunately, the beginning of the song wasn’t caught by the video so it starts off in the second verse.

Blackbird – An a cappella cover of the Beatles song by chilljam.com
Continuing on our Beatles kick, we’ve got an a cappella cover of the Beatles song Blackbird. Last weekend, we didn’t get together to jam as Jeremy is out of town. However, I ended up not being able to sleep later that night and decided to work on a version of Blackbird that we were toying with several weeks ago while hanging out on my deck.

Imagine – A cover of the John Lennon song by chilljam.com
Following the Beatles cover from last week, we’re releasing our cover of John Lennon’s song, Imagine this week. This song was played during the same outdoor session as last week’s version of Strawberry Fields Forever, but Imagine was played earlier on in the session. Actually, you can hear the wood crackling quite a bit in the background of this recording as it was still pretty wet at the time and hadn’t yet settled in for the quiet burn.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I watched Jeff Tweedy’s DVD, Sunken Treasure. I marveled at Tweedy’s ability to play songs that felt concise and complete with a great deal of open space and loose structures. He also has a great penchant for writing songs that explore interesting subjects but feel very relaxed at the same time.
After watching the DVD, I started playing around with some song ideas to work on something more relaxed in feel as well. Open House was the result of this little solo jamming session.

Let It Go is a late night experiment.
I was playing around with my acoustic and wondered what it’d be like to just let it go and not pay attention to rhythm or melody…or really anything at all. I just let my fingers move around as they felt like without any concern or thought of where they were going or what they were doing.
In the end, it sounded a bit tribal mixed with some flamenco feel stuff in there. Then I decided to just do the same thing with my voice. I just started singing and shouting stuff in my basement without studying the song or what was going on with it. To some extent, I was able to watch the sound waves of the guitar track on the screen as I recorded so I was able to have some idea of when the guitar would come in and out.

Can you hear the train? :: Free Music Podcast

We tried something a little different this week. Normally, when it comes to piecemeal recording, we’ve been recording elements of the music first, usually starting with Jeremy and then lay things over it, often ending with the vocal line at the end.
Well, last week, I couldn’t get to sleep and came up with some ideas of lyrics so I wrote them down as I usually do. However, in this case, I had a little melody line in my head so I decided to just lay them down a cappella. Afterwards I forwarded them on to Jeremy to see if he thought he could make use of them somehow.
As you can hear, Jeremy came up with a beautiful piano line over it and it comes together nicely.
I really love the showtunes feel to this song.
